Position: Writing Intern

Reports to: Editor-in-chief

Overview: We’re looking for an experienced, creative, internet-savvy writer who’s passionate about intersectional causes. You’ll write editorial, email, and site content to inspire and activate our members to take offline action. Let’s Do This!

This intern will be required to work 12 hours per week from September 10-December 14. The pay rate for this internship is $13/hour.

What You’ll Do:

  • Pitch and write articles about DoSomething campaigns and members for publications like Teen Vogue and Huffington Post
  • Write email broadcasts to our 2.4 million email subscribers
  • Write for and manage DoSomething’s Medium publication
  • Oversee and update DoSomething’s About Us page
  • Help with research and writing for video scripts

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to write professional quality content online
  • How to generate and pitch compelling story ideas
  • Best practices for branded content and cross-functional collaboration
  • How to manage a Medium publication

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills
  • Excellent copy editing skills and attention to detail (have I made any typos here? Likely!)
  • Awareness of social causes, political happenings, and current events
  • Understanding of internet culture, language, and trends
  • Familiarity with the DoSomething.org brand, our campaigns, and our written content (pro tip: check us out on Teen Vogue, HuffPost, and Medium!)
  • Creative and compelling story ideas
  • Timeliness, professionalism, and the ability to work independently

  • Cover Letter: Your cover letter should not exceed 300 words. (Pro tip:We describe our brand voice as “Relevant! Inspiring! Never just meh.” In your cover letter, please use those tenets and showcase a) your best writing ability and b) why you’re uniquely qualified for the position.)
  • Writing Sample: In the space allotted, please submit one piece of published writing, whether a news story, feature, column, essay, or op-ed. (No poetry or fiction, please.) Submissions should be a link to an online story or a public Dropbox file of a print piece.
